Most have worked with traditional biodiesel — but we get asked all the time, what are the advantages of HDRD, and what is it?
HDRD (Hydrotreated Renewable Diesel), is produced through hydrotreating and hydrocracking to create a cleaner, more dependable fuel. It is virtually identical to petroleum diesel and can be used as a full replacement, unlike traditional biodiesel blends that have limits on use and storage.
Performance & Compatibility
- High cetane number: Leads to better combustion, smoother engine performance, and easier cold starts.
- Excellent cold flow properties: Performs well in cold climates (important in Western Canada), unlike some biodiesels that gel in low temperatures.
- Lower particulate matter: Cleaner burning.
Storage & Handling
- Chemically stable: it does not absorb water as quickly.
- Long shelf life: Comparable to petroleum diesel, which reduces fuel management concerns for bulk storage.
- Lower risk of filter plugging and fuel system contamination.
- No need for separate winter/summer blends — consistent performance year-round.
